No "shtick" at Shekem in Modiin

We bought our appliances from Bella at Shekem in the Ishparo mall, and she deserves a strong recommendation. She is straightforward, reasonable, pleasant and very helpful.

We looked at other local places and compared prices to zap.co.il offerings. Her prices were comparable to the lower half of the prices on zap, and because we bought a number of our appliances there, we received some discount on the cost.

Her service was outstanding. There was no "shtick" in any of the sales at Shekem -- a welcome change from some other stores. She ordered the specific model oven we wanted, and she arranged installation and service for all the appliances we bought. When we had a concern with the TV, they were very accommodating about making a change.

It was incredibly fun, but for thrill seekers, not the light hearted.

MONEY BACK and this includes electrical, textile everything. There is a 2 week limit I think according to the law, but even that you can stand your ground. I had a NEW refrigerator conk out after 7 months and believe you me, I got ALL my money back, they wanted to pay me to get rid of me.

GET YOUR MONEY BACK. Call me or some good friend in front of the clerk giving you trouble, talk in English and say to the clerk "just a minute, 'm talking to my lawyer"; yep, it works. Trust me on this.

I am Aryeh.

I am contractor living in a beautiful Haredi Yishuv, Maale
Amos. I have lived here for almost 18 years. The Yishuv has under-

gone many changes over the years, but unfortunately has remained

somewhat small. We would like to change that.

It is my opinion that Maale Amos is a small Goshen. We are out of

the way, just outside of Jerusalem. We have clean air. My house

Info4U: Sending & Receiving Packages in Israel

In my experience shipping from the EU and China is cheap,

and some vendors just send their packages regular mail.

Some send it registered mail, and the tracking system in

China, and Israel is excelent.

There is also two different systems for sending mail,

although it is not advertised. I find that anything in an

envelope to the US arrives in a week, and anything in a

small envelope arrives in Israel in about a week from the

US, or less from the EU.

Large envelopes, any boxes, etc take 2-3 weeks, sometimes

longer. One package took 35 days from when it was logged

in at the post office in the US, and its record never updated

again to delivery to me.

Another package was lost in the mail. After two months, a

replacement was sent. It was split into two envelopes sent

priority mail and I was lucky it, came in 8 days. The vendor

had to "eat" the cost of the new order, and priority mail

shipping.

The best service I've had was an order for some items small

and light enough to fit into a regular envelope and sent by

regular airmail. It was mailed from Vienna on Monday and

in my mailbox on Wednesday.

Note that all packages sent by courier service, including

the Post Office's EMS (BUT NOT REGULAR/PRIORITY MAIL),

require customs clearing, which costs money. Even if your

package is under the $50 limit for taxes, you have to pay

a fee, which for EMS is 30 NIS plus
VAT.

If you order from China, be aware that all mail to Israel

comes from Hong Kong. That means there is usually a

week for the package to travel inside China if it is not

mailed directly from Hong Kong. Once it is sent from/

arrived in Hong Kong, there is a delay while it waits
for space on an outgoing airplane. This is usually five

days. If the package is sent registered mail, you can go

to the Chinese Post Office website and see when it got in

line and when it is expected to leave. You can then see

when it arrives in Israel, and you can track it on
the Israeli Post Office website.

As for Israelis, postage in Israel is cheap to the Post Office,
expensive if you want delivery. The vendor also must

charge you VAT on the cost of the item and delivery.

In Hebrew, Marjoram is azovit (aleph-zayin-vav-vet-yud-taf.)
However, there are different varieties, eg.:

Majorana hortensis Moench
Sweet Marjoram (Azov Tarbuti, Za'atar)

Origanum majorana
Sweet Marjoram Rigani (Azovit Metuka, Mayoram or Mayoran)

Origanum vulgare L.
Common Marjoram (Azovit P'shutah)

The Marjoram we know in the West is generally the 2nd one, which in
Israel is sold as Mayoran (mem-yud-vav-resh-nun.) You can buy it in
the tiny spice bottles at the supermarket, however, I found it is
much cheaper - in fact, a fraction of the cost - if you buy a bag of
it in the tea section of the health food store (I bought mine at
Duvduvan on Kanfei Nesharim.)

I just made aliyah 2 years ago and I've been looking for an OBGYN for a really long time and I finally found a good one! His name is Dr. Herman Weiss, and recently made Aliyah from NY were he was trained and worked. He was highly recommended to me and after going to him for my pregnancy care I can tell you I was really impressed! I finally found an OBGYN in Jerusalem who is caring, conscientious and meticulous- with the American bedside manner! Green Exterminator in "5Towns"

The following is an unsolicited recommendation after a job
well done.

We recently did our first "green extermination and we were
very happy with the results so far.

We didn't have much in the way of ants etc but the few we
had were no longer dying on the floor so that's we did
risus again (after nearly 3 years). Since we did it (just
over a week ago) we haven't seen any walking
around and have only found a few bodies.

We were very happy with the service, with the minimal
disruption (though you can't escape entirely) and the
fact that there was no awful smell. In fact, the smell was
kind of pleasant-citrus.

Yitzchak Dorfman saved me a bundle on taxes

For the first time since moving to Israel, I needed to file tax returns
in the U.S. this year, and for a number of reasons it was quite
complicated, so I was not able to do my own. This gentleman's
post on a user group caught my attention because we share the
same surname, and he was running an early bird special a few
months before the normal filing time. I thought I'd give it a try,
and he saved me quite a bundle off the tax I would have had to pay.

His rates are quite reasonable. You do not have to travel to Jerusalem
to work with him; he is willing to complete all transactions by
phone/fax/internet (and a check by regular mail).

at the Institute of Ophthalmology at Tel Hashomer for a corneal
injury and required special care for multifocal contact lenses.

His name is Maoz Hadash. He is not a native English speaker, but
his English is excellent. He also teaches optometry at Tel Hashomer,
so he really knows his specialty! His diagnostic equipment is truly
cutting edge, and his skill and experience in fitting his clients with
the lenses they need for all types of eye wear is impressive.

Excellent Artist in Rehovot

This is a totally unsolicited recommendation.

Vivienne Maron has just completed an oil portrait of my eldest
granddaughter on her Batmitzvah.

She did an absolutely superb job - based on one photograph
- and clearly is very talented. She captured Noa's expression
perfectly, as well as her coloring. Seeing the completed painting
literally took my breath away!

Vivienne did such a great job that I intend to have portraits
painted of each of my grandchildren on the attainment of their
Bar/Batmitzvahs and keep them as family heirlooms.
A wonderful "yerusha" for them one day...

Vivienne's prices are most reasonable - the "value" of each
portrait far outweighs the cost - aside from which she is a
positively delightful person and will work with you to find the
right photograph for the portrait.

After knowing for ages that a reverse osmosis water filter is the only
filter which really removes everything that we do not want in our bodies,
including residual medications which are being found in the water,
I finally installed one.

The filters only need to be changed 1x per year.

Benny's the place for meat in RBS

I know Benny's-the- meat-store advertises as being totally meat savvy,
but I don't really eat much meat. But we eat chicken. Lots and lots of
chicken. And Benny's is so totally the place for ordering chicken.

Other 'fresh' chicken I buy I usually need to rinse off because they
don't smell so, um, fresh. Never, NEVER with Benny's (and I've
ordered many a bird).
DID I MENTION they don't charge more for cutting up the chicken
to your specifications? ?

DID I MENTION they will REMOVE THE SKIN FOR YOU FOR
NO EXTRA CHARGE!?!
I really have been so, so, so SO impressed with them.

Oh, and the prices are GREAT. I have been getting all this gishmak
service and I have been paying LESS than what I usually find in the
grocery store. And they have the frozen chulent meat I use and ground
meat and ground turkey and all the other stuff we eat up around here.

Ellie Fein (it was a great cut by the way!) and realized that my sheital
was in dire need of some revamping too.

I asked if she would also do my wig and although it wasn't in the plan

A Cake Decorator's Delight in Jerusalem
